Digitization in stationary retail: networking instead of competition

The German Retail Association (HDE) and the German Association for the Digital Economy (BVDW) are advocating measures to drive digitization at the PoS, among other things. Every one of us has heard the above sentences or uttered them ourselves, and it's not without reason that online retail is booming. This leads to losses in stationary retail and leaves city centers deserted. However, both HDE and BVDW are convinced that appropriate digitization measures could revitalize local retail.

What can this look like? Above all, the topic of multichannel must be driven forward, according to Marco Junk, Managing Director of the BVDW: "We have to stop seeing online retail and brick-and-mortar retail as competitors. Instead, we can strengthen brick-and-mortar retail by making it digitally capable and dovetailing online and offline shopping."

The two associations see it as the task of the future government to finally ensure fast WLAN across the board and the compatibility of software through standard formats and APIs. In addition, innovative pilot projects and pioneers as well as funding programs are needed. Due to the effects of the pandemic, only 40 percent of retail companies in Germany are able to invest in the future. Last but not least, there is a lack of open communication between tech companies, politicians, retailers and associations. Competitive thinking prevents innovation.
